I'm going to violate my separation of politics and Music business rule, this one time just because it's a cool story.
"Sometime in 2010 I wrote a political song and published it to Youtube. It happened to be heard by one of the folks in the Herman Cain for President" campaign. The name of the song was "Beat Obama with a Cain" and this is the video he saw (https://youtu.be/kQw7MyPrwJA).
Afterwards, I was encouraged to produce a broadcast quality audio track that could be used in campaign videos, and seeing a chance to gain National attention to one of my songs, I jumped on it.
I booked a session in Nashville at "Jay's Place" and it just happened to be the same day that Charlie Rose of the "Muscle Shoals Horns" was there working on another project with Sam Lavine and a trumpet player whose name escapes me, but was one of Delbert McClinton's regulars.
However, after coming back with an amazing track the following weekend, Mr. Cain suspended his presidential campaign after allegations of a extra marital affaire.
One evening I was talking to Jimbeau on the phone and I told him the story. Him being a militant gay liberal, he laughed his ass off. Then he suggested I come on up and we'd fix it. I did and this is the result.
As I said, I don't ordinarily mix my music with my political preferences, I think anyone that would alianate half of the market is a fool. Espcially in this day and age. But if you read between the lines it tells the story of a "militant gay liberal" and an extremely flawed "conservative christian" who could maintain a friendship and work together to create something as special as this song is to me.
You see, anyone who has ever had the honor of cowriting with Jimbeau's learns to STF up and let him lead, which is what makes this song so meaningful to me. You see, Jimbeau's idea was to write this song about someone who would be the least likely to ever let me down like Mr. Cain did...myself. And since Jimbeau took the lead, I have a permanent testament by an amazing mentor, someone who I've come to really miss since his passing.
